I sense a troll, Sindari told me as soon as he formed. The shaman from the basement pub.

Yup. We’re going to knock him on his butt and question him. Reb is still missing, and so are all those grenades.

As I slipped outside, I wasn’t surprised when Willard and Walker came out after me. She had her rifle. Walker had taken off his jacket and pushed up his sleeves. Maybe he was contemplating getting furry.

My senses told me the shaman was positioned out of sight on the street leading to Willard’s parking lot. It was a quiet side street with a lot of cars parked along both sides. A battle could do a lot of damage to property, but we were in the heart of the city, so I didn’t know where else I could try to lead him that would be better. At least, between the rain and the darkness, there weren’t many potential witnesses around.

“Stay here,” I whispered. “I’m going to camouflage so he won’t sense me coming.”

“If he gets close, I’m taking a shot,” Willard whispered back.

“Just be careful about bullets bouncing off.” I activated my stealth charm, and Sindari and I trotted across the parking lot.

We slowed as we neared the sidewalk. A tall brick building hid most of the street from view, but my senses told me the shaman wasn’t far away. He hadn’t gotten any closer though. Had he stopped to call for backup? To prepare a spell?

Sindari and I split apart, so we could approach him from opposite sides of the street. With Sindari’s magical stealth, he should also be able to get close without being sensed.

Once we reached the sidewalk, Ogdar the shaman came into view. He wore a trench coat and stood in the shadows, but enough illumination came from a streetlamp that I could make out his blue skin and tangle of long white hair. He stood with his head back, as if stargazing, but I sensed him gathering magic around him.

I drew Storm and almost rushed him, hoping to mow him down before he knew I was there, but I jerked to a halt. He gripped something in front of his stomach with both hands, something with a strong magical aura that I recognized.

What the hell? It was Chasmmoor’s gargoyle box, the box that had launched more than a dozen kinds of terrible monsters at me the past few nights. How had this guy gotten it? And was Chasmmoor still alive? Was my house still standing?

That box… Sindari had crossed the street and crept closer to the shaman but also paused.

I know. Get it before he opens the lid.

I ran toward him, not making a sound, but somehow Ogdar sensed me coming. Or maybe he was just ready to attack. He opened the lid on the box, and familiar crimson light flowed out.
